Small World Tools

Supporting education, health, economic self-sufficiency, and human rights in the developing world is critically important. Both because it is the right thing to do for our fellow human beings, and because moving towards peace and plenty in the poorest parts of the planet will —more than anything else —help bring stability to our world.

My interest in the developing world began at an early age, and I’ve been privileged to do volunteer work in Africa, and professional and volunteer work here in the US, for organizations making a difference in the rest of the world.

Below are a number of nonprofit organizations, many small and not widely known, who are making a significant difference on key issues. I know their work first hand. I support them, and encourage you to do the same. You can click on each name to go to their web site and learn more.

New Global Citizens

New Global Citizens’ innovative program combines the passion, connectivity, and resources of Generation Y with the solutions of grassroots social entrepreneurs around the world to create change on a global scale. I served as the founding director of this organization, and remain very proud of the work it is doing, helping develop caring global citizens who will have a positive impact on their world throughout their lives.

The Firelight Foundation

Supports critical, grassroots programs for children who are orphaned or affected by HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa.

Global Fund for Women

A groundbreaking funder that advocates for and defends women's human rights by making grants to support women's groups around the world.

The Urgent Action Fund for Women’s Human Rights

This funder plays a unique and important role, by providing needed funding very quickly, sometimes within a week, at critical moments when women’s rights defenders are poised to make great gains or face serious threats to their lives and work.

Amazon Watch

Amazon Watch works to protect the rainforest and advance the rights of indigenous peoples in the Amazon Basin. We partner with indigenous and environmental organizations in campaigns for human rights, corporate accountability and the preservation of the Amazon's ecological systems.

Foundation for the People of Burma

Burma is one of the poorest countries in the world. HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and other infectious diseases are prevalent but no statistics are maintained.  Food security is an ongoing concern. 2008's cyclone plunged Burma even deeper into humanitarian crisis. This U.S.-based organization focuses exclusively on Burma, working with local partners to provide primary healthcare, clean water and sanitation, food security, basic education and leadership training.
